DESCRIPTION

Spurpunk is a steampunk-inspired mobile tower defense game. Players use magical cards to destroy monsters and to keep them from harming a ghost town in need of protection. But the catch is that you can't control which cards you're dealt. Players must adjust their strategy on the fly to succeed in Spurpunk.

Designing these levels was striking a balance between two genres; strategy and puzzle. While iterating on level designs, I was designing a fast action strategy game because of the card-slinging element; but at the same time, I was also designing intricate puzzles, as I had to factor in the layout of each level and how that could affect where players would put their towers, and how that could affect other enemy, environment and card interactions.

On Spurpunk, I worked with a team of level designers for USC Games. These were my responsibilities:

  • Sketching, designing, iterating and implementing 30 levels suited for strategy and puzzle-like gameplay with multiple solutions and approaches.

  • Using Excel, iterating on each level's balance based off of player feedback.​
